For the start of the New Year, I have a very simple meditation for you today, the ten count. I’ve shared this one before, but will do it again with fresh, new, new years’ energy.

This is a great meditation, or mindfulness exercise, to step gently into the meditative waters, and begin working to tame your monkey mind.

Okay, this is a very simple meditation, at least on paper.

The goal is to simply to repeat 10 breaths, or ten inhales and 10 exhales, without hopping on a train of thought.

In other words, if you picture yourself in the train station of your mind, we don’t want to catch any of the trains (or thoughts) coming into or leaving the station. We can see them come in. Watch them stop, or head back on their way, but we don’t want to hop on the traincar and explore. You already have a great train, it’s the meditation you’re doing.

So we’ll simply inhale…and count to 5, exhale, count to 5, and do this ten times in a row…when a thought comes up, and it will…see the thought, but leave it alone. If it helps, you can say drop it…or thinking, or simply I am present a recent favorite of Jessica’s inspired by our upcoming interview with Paul Selig.

You can do this meditation sitting down with both feet planted firmly on the ground, or laying down on your back. Eventually, you could even, or espically do this walking, or running as well…it’s one of the first meditations we taught in our mindful running and mindful walking programs…

Though you’re hearing this in the New Year, it’s New Year’s eve here, and I want to talk about a topic most of us seem to struggling with, and that’s feeling stuck. WE could be feeling stuck at home, at work, spiritually, financially, or with our partner, but in some aspect of our life, almost all of us feel dis-empowered, or unsure where to turn. Okay, this is a super-simple meditation, but it requires your help. I want you to visualize what’d you like for the new year. Dream big. Is it a new job? Starting a new company? A new home? A new baby? To move across the country? Or the world? Or to become a world changer, a game changer, or a planet saver? Or maybe it’s more spiritual, to improve your practice, to dive deep, to take your spirituality or connection to an entirely new level, or to find a spiritual teacher or guide to help you on your path. Or maybe it’s more physical, such as your greatest health, or a return to perfect health, or to run a 5K or even marathon this spring. Or maybe it’s financial? It was the ultimate twist of fate that a famous neurosurgeon who taught at Harvard, and would tell patients and students alike that the soul is merely an illusion of the mind, would be struck down with what should have been a fatal brain disease.

Dr. Eben Alexander spent a week in a coma, brain-dead with cerebral meningitis, with doctors suggesting his wife pull the plug. They gave up on antibiotics and waited for him to die. But after 7 days without any signs of brain activity, he miraculously came back, and with the most incredible near-death experience to share.

Today we have a life-changing guest on the show. I found his book to be incredible powerful, and moving. It’s ironic to say moving, since you used to be one of the most analytical, left-brained people out there.

His name is Dr. Eben Alexander, until 2008 he had been a renowned academic neurosurgeon for over 30 years and taught at Harvard Medical Center for over 15 years. He thought he knew how the mind, brain and consciousness worked, and that Near Death Experiences, and any other unusual experiences were merely illusions or aberrations created by the mind. If someone was resuscitated and told him about it, perhaps seeing a bright light, or visiting deceased loved one’s, he’d very kindly and compassionately tell them it just wasn’t possible. It wasn’t science, and that they’re mind made it up.

Yet he’d seen a lot in the operating room and in ER. He’d seen patient appear to die and come back. He’d seen miraculous bursts of lucidity or clarity just before people’s deaths, and much more that he couldn’t even begin to explain. But as a hard-nosed scientist, he ignored people’s stories, reports, and what he’d even seen with his own two eyes.

And that made him such a perfect candidate for what would happen next.

That’s where we pick up the interview, talking about Near Death Experiences, the possibility of after-life, about what the human brain does and does not do…or maybe to say, why it doesn’t let us see certain things, and why what he experienced means so much for us.

Today I’d planned on sharing with you a meditative journey of the Christmas walk I took with my wife and co-host Jessica Lee, but then we received a text from a dear friend on Maui where we lived for many years. He was visiting an ancient Heiau, pronounced (Hey Ow) on Maui, or holy temple grounds of the Hawaiian ancestors.

It was a place we’ve been to many times ourselves, over Christmas, or New Years, or Solstice. A place to reconnect, to say our prayers, and to make our well wishes for the days ahead. It’s also been a tremendous place to say prayers for healing, and watch them come true
